(By the mid-1850s the Industrial Revolution was lending a hand with fashion.
New synthetic dyes were starting to broaden the range of colours available to
everyone and the sewing machine - patented in 1851 - made sewing faster and
easier. Hoop skirts were introduced in this year as a replacement for an almost
intolerable weight of petticoats. Mass-produced in steel, they were soon available
to almost everyone.)

(A bride and an older woman - most likely the bride's mother. White wedding dresses were an innovation of the 19th century, and still only worn by a minority of brides. Less fashionable women would be married in a coloured dress which could later be worn for "best".)
